1 Killed, 3 Injured in Work Zone Crash

Construction zones can be frustrating for drivers. Motorists may need to slow down and be alert. They may even need to stop for some time, especially if there are one-lane roads. If a driver is not paying attention, they may even cause a crash, and it can be serious or fatal.

This is what recently happened in New Jersey, a little more than 10 miles east of Philadelphia.  A road worker was killed and three others were injured when a driver plowed into a sanitation truck. This caused a chain reaction crash in which one of the vehicles hit the victims.

The fatal accident happened on the morning of May 29 on White Horse Pike in Camden County. The injured employees were installing a meter pit when the vehicle entered their workspace. The incident was described as a three-car crash involving an elderly driver who rapidly accelerated over the grass. She hit one of the workers and sent them into oncoming traffic.

One of the road workers was killed, while three others were injured. One of the workers had to be hospitalized.

All four victims were working for New Jersey American Water at the time of the crash. The woman driving the car was not identified. She was driving an Infiniti sedan with New Jersey state plates. The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage. The woman suffered minor injuries but was badly shaken over the accident.

The crash occurred on a problematic strip of a thoroughfare that officials have tried to make safer. It is known as a dangerous stretch of the White Horse Pike.

 Causes of Accidents in Construction Zones 

Drivers need to be careful and alert in construction zones. Otherwise, they can cause accidents. Some common causes include the following: 

• Driver inattention. Distractions from mobile devices, eating, or other activities can cause drivers to miss warning signs or changes in traffic patterns.
• Exceeding the reduced speed limits in construction zones increases the risk of collisions.
• Unexpected road conditions. Changes in road surfaces, lane shifts, and narrowed lanes can confuse drivers and lead to accidents.
• Inadequate signage. Poor or unclear signage can fail to adequately warn drivers of upcoming construction activities and necessary actions.
• Driver impatience. Frustration from delays can cause aggressive driving behaviors.

When an accident occurs, several parties can be liable. Drivers are generally expected to follow all posted signs and drive safely within construction zones. Construction companies can be held liable if poor signage or unsafe practices contribute to an accident. Municipalities or states may also be liable if road conditions or construction management practices are found to be unsafe.
