1 Killed, 5 Injured in Crash in Hunterdon County

CarAcc10

A teen never got to experience her first day of the new school year, as sadly, she was killed in a crash on the way to school. She and her brother were involved in a three-vehicle accident on the morning of August 22 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Franklin Township Police responded to the fatal multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hogback Road, Route 617, and Lower Lansdown Road. Three vehicles collided there for unknown reasons.

One passenger died at the accident scene. She has been identified as a 16-year-old girl from Franklin Township. Her brother was also in the vehicle and was airlifted from the crash scene. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. A GoFundMe has been created and it has currently raised more than $103,000. The siblings were on their way to school when the crash occurred.

Four others were injured in the accident. One person was treated at the accident scene, while the others were seriously injured and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, Franklin Township Police Department, and Quakertown NJ Fire and Rescue all responded to the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A change.org petition had gathered more than 3,700 signatures so far. The petition is asking Hunterdon County to make safety improvements at the intersection of Route 617, Hogback Road, and Lower Landsdown Road, where the crash occurred. This intersection has been home to previous fatal accidents, but nothing has changed. Residents are asking for it to be made safer.

Poor Road Design

High volumes of vehicles have to travel on roads, and when these roads are unsafe, serious accidents can occur. Here are some elements of poor road design:

  • Inadequate signage. Poorly placed, unclear, or insufficient road signs can confuse drivers, leading to accidents.
  • Sharp curves and blind spots. Roads with sudden, sharp curves or blind spots can surprise drivers, leading to loss of control and crashes.
  • Inadequate lighting. Poorly lit roads increase the risk of nighttime accidents, as drivers have difficulty seeing hazards.
  • Lack of proper markings. Missing or faded lane markings can cause lane drifting and collisions.
  • Poorly designed intersections. Intersections that are not designed to handle high volumes of traffic can lead to bottlenecks and significant delays.
  • Inadequate lane widths. Narrow lanes can slow down traffic and increase the likelihood of side-swiping accidents, leading to congestion.
  • Lack of crosswalks. Roads without clearly marked pedestrian crossings put pedestrians at risk of being hit by vehicles.
