1 Killed in Solo-Vehicle Crash

CarCrash8

Halloween is supposed to be a night of fun, but for one family, it was a night of tragedy. A crash on Halloween night claimed the life of a young woman. The solo-vehicle crash occurred in Union County just before midnight on October 31.

The accident happened at the intersection of St. George Avenue and Chandler Avenue in Roselle. A Chevrolet Equinox was heading west when it hit a curb. It then went through a fence, continued through an open lot, and came to rest in a Wawa parking lot.

Roselle firefighters arrived at the accident scene and attempted to provide immediate medical aid. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Linden, suffered minor injuries. He cooperated with authorities. The driver’s sister, a 19-year-old woman also from Linden, was a passenger in the vehicle. She died at the accident scene.

St. George Avenue was closed for more than nine hours. The Roselle Police Department, Linden Police Department Traffic Team, Union County Police Traffic Team, and Union County Sheriff’s Identification Team all assisted with the accident. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Roselle Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.

How Hitting a Curb Can Cause an Accident

Hitting a curb can lead to an accident in several ways, especially depending on the speed, angle, and other road conditions. Here’s how:

  • Driver reaction. The surprise of hitting a curb can lead to overcorrection, where the driver jerks the wheel too hard to get back on course, potentially leading to a loss of control. This overcorrection is a common cause of secondary accidents after a curb hit.
  • Loss of control. When a tire hits the curb, especially at a high speed or sharp angle, it can jerk the steering wheel or cause the car to swerve. This can lead to a temporary loss of control, making it difficult for the driver to regain direction and possibly veering the car into other lanes or off the road.
  • Damage to tires and wheels. Hitting a curb can cause tire punctures, bulges, or other structural damage. Damaged tires may suddenly blow out, which can lead to a loss of control and an accident. The impact can also bend or crack the wheel rim, affecting the vehicle’s handling and stability, increasing the chances of a rollover or skidding.
  • Increased risk of rollovers. If a car hits a curb at high speed or at the wrong angle, especially an SUV or taller vehicle, it can cause a rollover. Rollovers are particularly dangerous as they increase the likelihood of severe injury or fatality.
