2 Killed, 1 Injured in Wrong-Way Crash
When driving, it’s important to travel in the correct direction. If you are heading north in a southbound lane of a freeway, for example, you will likely end up in a head-on collision. These are the deadliest types of crashes.
A wrong-way crash did recently occur in Paramus, killing two people and leaving another seriously injured. The fatal accident occurred in the early morning hours of July 5 on the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County.
A Honda sedan was heading north in the southbound lane of the highway when it collided head-on with a Toyota SUV at milepost 163.4 in Paramus. Both drivers died at the accident scene. A passenger in the Toyota, a 20-year-old woman from Pompton Plains, suffered moderate injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as a 55-year-old man. The driver of the Honda was a 38-year-old woman. Both were from Newark.
Both vehicles were smashed in the front. There were broken car parts scattered on the side of the road. All lanes were blocked shortly after the crash, but cars were allowed to drive on the shoulder to pass by.
The cause of the crash is unknown. Police are not sure how the woman got on the parkway heading in the wrong direction. It’s possible that drugs or alcohol may have been involved.
Why Are Wrong-Way Crashes So Dangerous?
Wrong-way crashes are particularly dangerous for several reasons:
- Head-on collisions. Wrong-way crashes often result in head-on collisions, which are among the most severe types of accidents due to the combined speed of both vehicles involved. This significantly increases the force of impact, leading to more serious injuries or fatalities.
- High speeds. These crashes frequently occur on highways or other high-speed roads, where vehicles are traveling at high velocities. The higher the speed, the greater the impact and the more severe the consequences.
- Driver unpreparedness. Drivers are usually unprepared for a vehicle coming toward them on the wrong side of the road. This lack of anticipation reduces their reaction time, making it harder to avoid the collision.
- Nighttime. Many wrong-way crashes happen at night, when visibility is lower and drivers may be tired. Also, a large number of wrong-way drivers are impaired by alcohol or drugs, which further reduces their ability to drive safely.
