What are these Different Terms I’m Hearing about My Break?
If you’ve suffered a broken bone, you may hear the fracture described as open or closed and as displaced or non-displaced. The diagnosis of a fracture is very important to how it is treated, as well as your prognosis for complete healing. Here is what those terms mean, in plain language:
- If your fracture is non-displaced, this means the bone is broken but has not moved out of alignment.
- A displaced fracture is one where the bone has broken into at least two pieces.
- If your fracture is described as closed, this means that the bone did not break through the skin. A closed fracture is also called a simple fracture.
- An open fracture is one where the bone has pierced through the skin. An open fracture is also known as a compound fracture.
Likewise, a skull fracture can be described in many different ways. A depressed skull fracture is one where pieces of bone press on the brain. These pieces must be carefully removed to relieve the pressure they are putting on the brain. A comminuted fracture is one where the skull has broken into several pieces, possibly shattered into fragments in a particularly catastrophic accident. If splinters of bone have entered the brain, they must be delicately removed through surgery to prevent or mitigate a traumatic brain injury. Another type of skull fracture is a basilar skull fracture, where the base of the skull has broken. A basilar skull fracture can lead to facial and cranial nerve damage, as well as cerebrospinal fluid leaking from the nose or ears or blood pooling up into the sinuses. Clearly, any skull fracture must be carefully diagnosed and promptly treated by medical experts for the best outcome available.
Finally, any fractures in the vertebra must also be carefully handled to prevent paraplegia, quadriplegia or other permanent paralysis if a broken vertebra presses on or cuts into the spinal cord. Vertebral injuries can also diminish mobility and motion even without spinal cord injury, which can result in permanent disability from working and a lessened quality of life.
Are There Other Risks or Complications from a Fracture?
After a fracture, you are probably concerned with whether the bone will heal properly and function as it did before the break. Your doctor, however, will also be concerned with other grave risks and complications that may come from a serious break. These include:
- Nerve Damage
- Broken or Ruptured Blood Vessels
- Osteomyelitis (an infection in the bone or marrow)
