Woman Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash
Crashes often occur at intersections. These accidents can happen due to various reasons. Sometimes they are minor in nature, but in some cases, they can be deadly.
This was recently the case in Parsippany. A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on the evening of May 6 at West Hanover Avenue and Gov. Chris Christie Drive.
The 36-year-old woman from Dover was killed after her Hyundai Sonata collided with a Volvo S60 at the intersection. First responders arrived at the accident scene. The woman was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where she later died. The driver of the Volvo was also taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
The cause of the crash is unknown. The accident is under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Vehicular Homicide Task Force, and Parsippany Police Department.
Causes of Intersection Crashes
Navigating intersections can be complex due to the design of the roadways as well as other factors such as the following:
- Failure to yield. Drivers may ignore yield signs and refuse to yield the right of way to other vehicles or pedestrians.
- Running red lights. Drivers disobeying traffic signals and running red lights can lead to T-bone collisions.
- Left turns. Drivers may make unsafe or illegal left turns, either by misjudging the gap in oncoming traffic or failing to see an oncoming vehicle.
- Distracted driving. Drivers may be distracted by phones, passengers, or other activities, leading to delayed reactions to traffic signals, signs, and other vehicles.
- Excessive speed reduces the ability to stop quickly or navigate intersections safely, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
- Impaired driving. Alcohol or drug impairment slows reaction times, impairs judgment, and increases the risk of crashes.
- Complex intersection design. Intersections with multiple lanes, turn lanes, or unusual configurations can confuse drivers and increase the potential for accidents.
- Aggressive driving. Behaviors such as tailgating, weaving, and road rage increase the risk of intersection crashes.
- Improper lane use. Drivers may use the wrong lane for turning or continuing straight through the intersection.
It’s important to understand other factors that can play a role in intersection crashes. For example, a high volume of traffic can increase the risk of an accident. More cars means a higher risk of an accident. Also, a lack of driving experience can be a factor. A driver who has minimal experience navigating intersections runs a higher risk of making an error that leads to an accident.
