15 Injured in NJ Transit Bus Crash
Buses can be found all over New Jersey roadways. These buses help residents and workers get from place to place. Buses can be convenient, but when they get into accidents, the results can be disastrous.
A recent crash in Union caused 15 people to seek medical treatment. The accident occurred on the morning of October 25 near the intersection of Stuyvesant Avenue and Stanley Terrace.
The crash happened when a NJ Transit bus was hit head on by a car going in the opposite direction. The vehicle then swerved in front of the bus near the intersection.
Fifteen people sought medical treatment after the crash. One person was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. A second bus was traveling behind the first bus when the crash happened, causing that bus to stop short. Four people on that second bus were injured. All injuries were said to be minor.
Effects of Head-on Accidents
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of car accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the high impact forces involved. Here are some common effects to be aware of:
- Head and brain injuries can occur, such as concussions, skull fractures, or traumatic brain injuries.
- Neck and spine injuries, like whiplash, spinal cord damage, or paralysis, can occur.
- Chest and abdominal injuries, such as broken ribs, internal bleeding, and damage to organs like the lungs, heart, or liver, are common.
- Broken bones such as fractures in arms, legs, and pelvis are common due to the sudden deceleration and subsequent impact.
- Facial injuries due to airbag deployment can cause burns or fractures, while shattered glass may lead to lacerations.
- Survivors may develop various psychological effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can cause them to experience anxiety, depression, or flashbacks. Some victims develop a fear of driving after the trauma. If others involved in the crash were killed or severely injured, survivors may experience emotional distress, also known as survivor’s guilt.
- There are also economic and legal consequences to consider. Survivors may require surgeries, long-term rehabilitation, or therapy. Victims could face temporary or permanent inability to work, which means a loss of income. Cars are frequently totaled due to the intensity of the crash. Also, liability lawsuits and insurance disputes tend to follow, especially when fault is contested.
- Head-on accidents can also impact others. The injuries can place emotional, financial, and caregiving burdens on family members. Head-on collisions are typically very serious. They require emergency responders and investigations, leading to disruptions.
