Woman Killed in Morris County Pedestrian Accident
Pedestrians have a lot of responsibility. They need to make sure they cross roads safely, and this means crossing at crosswalks. Crossing mid-block is technically considered jaywalking, which is not only illegal but also dangerous.
Sadly, a woman was killed in a pedestrian accident in Dover while crossing a street outside of a crosswalk. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of November 11 on Prospect Street.
The74-year-old woman from Dover was walking on Prospect Street, near the Garden Savings Federal Credit Union, when she was hit by a vehicle. Two vehicles were involved. The first car struck the woman and was then rear-ended by another vehicle.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the accident scene. The woman was taken to St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover, where she later died. Both drivers remained at the accident scene. They are cooperating with investigators.
Initial reports show that the woman was crossing mid-block, outside of a marked crosswalk, when she was hit by the car. The crash is still under investigation. Law enforcement officials encourage anyone with more information to contact the Dover Police Department
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Pedestrian safety is crucial, especially in busy areas. Here are some tips to help keep pedestrians safe:
- Stay visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or in low-light conditions. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of their vehicle. Carry a flashlight if walking at night.
- Use designated crosswalks. Always cross at marked crosswalks or intersections with traffic signals. Avoid crossing the road at non-designated areas, as drivers may not expect pedestrians there.
- Follow traffic signals. Obey pedestrian signals and cross only when the “Walk” signal is on. Even if you have a green light, be alert for turning vehicles.
- Avoid distractions. Stay off your home and avoid texting or using your phone while walking, especially when crossing the street. Keep your focus on your surroundings to detect any potential dangers.
- Look both ways. Always look left, right, and left again before crossing the road. Be aware of vehicles coming from all directions, especially at intersections.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs. Being impaired affects your judgment and reaction time, making it more dangerous to navigate traffic as a pedestrian.
- Be extra cautious in poor weather. Rain, fog, or snow can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Be more vigilant in bad weather, as vehicles may have a harder time stopping.
