Big Rig Crashes Into New Jersey Home

18Wheeler

Truck drivers have a huge responsibility when they are on the road. They need to stay alert at all times or else they can cause a serious accident due to their large size.

This is what recently happened in New Jersey. Fortunately, nobody was killed when a big rig collided with a home after the driver suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel.

The tractor-trailer was traveling on Middlesex Avenue in Carteret when it suddenly left the roadway. It went through two backyards and collided with a couple homes on Chrome Avenue. The driver apparently suffered a medical episode, which caused the truck to go off the road. The driver was unconscious when police arrived. Police officers arrived at the accident scene and had to break a window in the tractor trailer to get the driver out. The truck was still in gear with the driver’s foot still on the accelerator pedal. The tires of the truck were spinning and burning when police arrived. The driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Several police officers were injured due to broken glass and smoke from the crash. Although the truck hit several homes, no residents were injured. One woman was home during the crash, but was not in the back of the home where the accident occurred.

The roads in the area were blocked for some time as crews worked to remove the debris. Drivers were advised to find an alternate route in the area of Chrome Avenue and Middlesex Avenue.

Sudden Medical Emergencies in New Jersey

In New Jersey, a sudden medical emergency is defined as an unforeseen medical event that could cause a person to lose their life. The medical episode usually causes the person to lose consciousness. Some examples include heart attacks, strokes, and seizures.

It’s true that anyone can suffer a medical emergency at any time, even while driving. However, it may be difficult to use this as a defense to avoid being held liable for damages. The person who suffered the medical emergency has the burden of proof of showing that the incident could not have been predicted.

For example, a person who has never experienced any heart problems would not have been able to predict they would suffer a heart attack. As such, they might not be held liable for damages that occurred in a crash. However, if the driver has a history of heart issues and a doctor has advised against driving, the driver could be held liable for damages caused by a crash.
