Boy Killed in Bicycle Crash in Parsippany

Bike4

Children love riding bicycles, but they need to stay away from busy roads. Safety is key. Drivers who are in a hurry do not always see smaller objects such as bikes. This makes serious accidents more likely to occur.

Sadly, this recently happened in Parsippany in Morris County. An 8-year-old boy was killed after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of July 9 in the area of 189 Littleton Road.

A driver of a Mazda CX5 SUV hit the boy at a residential complex. First responders arrived, but they could not revive him. The boy died at the accident scene. The driver remained at the accident scene and is cooperating with investigators. The identities of the boy and driver have not been disclosed.

No further details were released as to what happened. Littleton Road was closed between Smith and Parsippany Roads as police investigated. Paramedics from Parsippany-Troy Hills EMS and Saint Clare’s Denville responded to the scene, while the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and township police are investigating the crash.

Dangers of Bicycle Accidents

The most severe outcome in a bicycle accident is fatality. When a person survives a crash, they could suffer from a range of injuries such as the following:

  • Head injuries. Without proper head protection, cyclists can suffer from traumatic brain injuries, concussions, or skull fractures. Even with a helmet, severe impacts can still cause significant harm.
  • Spinal injuries. Falls or collisions can lead to spinal cord injuries, which can result in partial or complete paralysis.
  • Fractures and broken bones. Common areas for fractures include the arms, legs, collarbones, and ribs. These injuries can occur from falls or being struck by a vehicle.
  • Internal injuries. Collisions, especially with motor vehicles, can cause internal bleeding and damage to internal organs. These injuries may not be immediately apparent but can be life-threatening.
  • Facial injuries. These include broken teeth, jaw fractures, and cuts or bruises on the face, which can occur from hitting the ground or another object.
  • Soft tissue injuries. These injuries involve damage to muscles, ligaments, and tendons, leading to sprains, strains, and contusions.
  • Road rash. This is a type of abrasion caused by sliding across the pavement, which can range from mild to severe and may lead to infections if not properly treated.
  • Psychological injuries. The trauma of an accident can lead to psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
