Deer Season Underway: Avoiding Car Accidents
It can be exciting to see deer on the side of the road during a drive around New Jersey. Does, bucks, and fawns are especially prevalent on rural roads. While cute, these animals can end up in the roadway, causing serious accidents.
Deer are out in the fall, particularly between October and late December. This is because male deer go into what is called a “rut” and begin actively searching for mates. This behavior results in an increase in deer movement, bringing them across roadways
This increase in activity leads to accidents. According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, there are an average of 15,000 motor vehicle accidents related to deer each year. More than half of those crashes happen between October and December, with 75% happening between dusk and dawn. So deer on the roadway is not a minor issue.
So how can you deal with these animals while driving on New Jersey roads? Here are some tips to stay safe.
Be Aware of High-Risk Areas
Look for deer crossing signs; these areas often have higher deer activity. Be cautious in rural or wooded areas, especially near fields or streams.
Stay Vigilant During Peak Hours
Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so be extra alert during these times. During breeding season (October through December), deer activity increases.
Use Your Lights Effectively
Use high beams when driving in dark areas (if there’s no oncoming traffic) to spot deer farther ahead. Look for the reflection of deer eyes on the road.
Adjust Your Speed
Drive slower in areas prone to deer. Reduced speed gives you more time to react should a deer enter the road and cross your path.
Scan the Sides of the Road
Deer often hang out on the sides of the road. Constantly check the shoulders and edges of the road for movement. When there’s one deer, there are likely more nearby. Deer like to travel in herds, so be cautious.
Do Not Swerve
If a collision seems unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can cause you to lose control or hit another vehicle or object such as a tree or pole.
Be Prepared
In case you do crash, make sure your seatbelt is tight so you don’t suffer whiplash or a concussion. Do not freeze up. Take some deep breaths and avoid locking your arms and legs. Fighting the gravity or inertia will only result in serious injuries.
