Dump Truck Crashes into NJ Target Store

One minute you’re inside the restroom at target, the next you’re stuck inside, waiting to be extricated. This was the situation a woman faced after a truck crashed into the Target store at North Bergen Commons on Tonnelle Avenue.
The crash happened in North Bergen on January 17, 2025. Five people were injured in the crash, which is believed to be an accident.
A dump truck and tractor trailer crashed into the busy Target store. The dump truck crashed through a concrete wall and left a gaping hole in the store.
The truck came from the top of a hill, in a construction zone. Surveillance video shows the truck, loaded with dirt and rocks, rolling down a steep hill. The truck picked up momentum, causing it to speed quickly down the hill, out of control.
The dump truck then traveled across two lanes of traffic. Part of it hit a tractor trailer, which caused it to slow down slightly before it crashed into the Target. The truck crashed into the front of the store, in the area where customer service and the bathrooms are located.
The crash injured five people, including the truck driver. All were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. A woman who was inside the restroom at the time was severely injured and had to be extricated by emergency crews.
It’s still unclear how the accident happened. It’s possible that the dump truck driver lost control or the truck’s brakes failed. In any case, the driver attempted to stop, as shown by the skid marks on the road. However, the brakes did not help much, causing the truck to fly down the hill at high speeds. It was a very scary situation for all involved.
Target is grateful for the quick response and their thoughts are with those who were injured. The store’s team is safe, with the store remaining closed as they assess the damage. The dump truck will be inspected as well.
It’s a miracle that more people weren’t injured. There were no pedestrians walking in the area. Hitting the tractor trailer caused the truck to slow down and lessen the impact. Plus, the courtesy desk area was not busy at the time of the crash.
The accident is still under investigation as firefighters continue to sort through the wreckage. Structural engineers are performing inspections to ensure the store building is safe.
