Fisher-Price Sleeper Recalled Due To Children Deaths
It is devastating when a child dies, especially when the death is caused by a defective product and could have been prevented. This is the case for a Fisher-Price product that has been responsible for more than 100 deaths.
When the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper was recalled in 2019, it was responsible for 32 deaths. The deaths were caused by babies rolling from their backs to their stomachs or sides without any type of restraint. Since the recall, many more children have died. Another 70 deaths have occurred since then. But why?
The problem is that hundreds of these sleepers are being resold every month on social media sites such as Facebook Marketplace. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has stated in the past that the company prohibits the sale of recalled products on its Marketplace and other sites and takes steps to prevent it from happening. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which is the government agency responsible for identifying unsafe consumer products in the United States, has issued almost 4,000 takedown requests for the sleepers between February 2022 and March 2023. The agency recently sent a letter to Meta asking it to do more to keep the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers off the Facebook Marketplace.
Facebook is in a position where it can identify recalled products such as the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper and stop them from being sold before they are listed. This would prevent further tragedies. The CPSC also asks Meta to inform sellers that they cannot sell recalled products as well as find a way to flag recalled and hazardous products.
The CPSC has also urged Fisher-Price to reannounce the recall with an incentive for consumers to destroy the defective products While the recall was reannounced in January, this had little effect in the number of listings on Facebook Marketplace.
It is unknown whether the sellers are knowingly or unknowingly selling recalled goods on Facebook Marketplace. In any case, Meta needs to take the issue seriously and remove listings that violate their rules. It is not fair that sellers can make money off recalled products that can cause children to suffer serious injuries or fatalities.
The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers were sold at major retailers nationwide between September 2009 and April 2019, including Walmart, Target, and Amazon. The product sold for a range of prices between $40 and $149. If you have one, you should destroy it and discard it to prevent others from selling it.
