Girl Injured In New Jersey Dog Attack

DogAttack

Dogs are not always man’s best friends. They may not even be a child’s best friend. Too many youngsters trust canines, only to get mauled in a dog attack. Some get seriously injured and even killed.

A 3-year-old girl is recovering from serious injuries after she was attacked by a family friend’s pitbull. The incident occurred in Vernon.

The details of the attack were not disclosed. However, the girl was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center after suffering injuries. She was then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her parents were also injured in the attack after they tried to get the dog off the child.

The family had just moved to New Jersey from Florida. The dog’s owner had the dog euthanized.

Dog Bites and Children

Thousands of children are bitten by dogs every year. Both stray and known dogs are a risk, but surprisingly, children are more likely to be bitten by dogs they know. It may be a neighbor’s dog, a family friend’s dog, or even their own dog.

Socialization is key. Guard dogs who spend time alone, away from people and other dogs, are more likely to be dangerous than dogs that are socialized and feel comfortable around people and animals.

People should take notice of dogs in their neighborhood. Which houses have them?  When you walk by the houses, do you see the dogs at home? If not, be wary because that could mean that the dog has escaped.

In urban and suburban areas, a loose dog can face confrontations that can make them likely to attack. While walkers can get attacked, roller skaters, roller bladers, skateboarders, and joggers are also at risk. Children and the elderly are also likely to get bitten, since they tend to move and react differently than other demographics.

When approaching a dog, be wary of their behavior. A dog that is stressed out may lick their lips, yawn while walking, and have their ears set back. A dog that is ready to attack may show the whites of their eyes, lower its head, and stare at its target.

If a dog moves toward you, stay still. Once you start running, you become the prey. If you think the dog may be trying to attack you, move away from it slowly. Turn your body sideways and move diagonally to make yourself less of a threat. Try to get higher up or out of the dog’s reach. If all else fails, stay as still as possible. In this situation, the dog will usually sniff you and then flee.
