Lactaid Milk Recalled in New Jersey, 26 Other States Due to Almond Contamination

ProductRecall

Many people drink milk, but they don’t want it to contain almonds. Nut allergies are common and can cause a person to become seriously injured or even killed.

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported after various milk products possibly contained traces of almond. HP Hood, LLC, voluntarily recalled several types of Lactaid Milk across New Jersey and 26 other states. The product may contain traces of almond, but it is not listed on the label.

The recall includes several products sold by HP Hood: Lactaid Whole Milk, 2% Calcium Enriched Milk, 2% Milk, 1% Milk, and Fat Free Milk and, sold in 96-ounce bottles. During a routine maintenance protocol, it was discovered that there was a potential for trace amounts of almonds.

The recall applies to containers with the code 51-4109 P2, with the best by dates ranging from November 22, 2024, to December 5, 2024. Other affected states in the area include New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Maine

No illnesses have been reported at this time. However, consumers need to be aware because those who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds can develop a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these milk products.

Customers who purchased any of the recalled items may return them to the place of business. They will be able to exchange them or receive a full refund.

Dangers of Nut Allergies

Nut allergies can be severe and even life-threatening. Here are some of the main dangers associated with them:

  • The most dangerous reaction is anaphylaxis, a rapid and severe allergic response that can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, rapid heartbeat, and a drop in blood pressure. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention.
  • Respiratory issues. Exposure to nuts can lead to respiratory problems such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and swelling of the airways, making it difficult to breathe.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms. Nut allergies can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
  • Skin reactions. Common symptoms include hives, rashes, and itching. These can range from mild to severe.
  • Risk of accidental exposure. Nut allergies are especially dangerous due to the risk of accidental exposure. Nuts are found in many foods, and cross-contamination can occur. This is why the trace amount of almonds is a major concern.
  • Delayed reactions. In some cases, allergic reactions may not occur immediately and could develop hours after exposure, making it more challenging to receive timely treatment.
