Man Hit by Train in Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Train3

Trains are not something to mess with. These vehicles can sometimes go as fast at 100 miles per hour. Whether you are a pedestrian or a motorist, you want to steer clear of railroad tracks at all times.

Still, many people end up on train tracks, whether accidental or on purpose. Unfortunately, this recently led to a fatality, with a 39-year-old man dying from injuries he suffered after getting hit by a NJ Transit train. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of September 14 in Red Bank.

The man was hit by North Jersey Coast Line train 7240 near the Monmouth Street Crossing. NJ Transit police, Red Bank police, and the Red Bank Fire Department were all on the scene. Officers performed life-saving measures on the man and took him to Riverview Medical Center, where he later died. On the ground near the railroad gate were the man’s personal belongings, including a shoe, sunglasses, and a blue baseball cap.

More than 90 minutes later, the southbound train was still in the station blocking the intersection of Monmouth Street and Bridge Avenue. Traffic was being diverted away from the accident scene. An alert on the NJ Transit website stated that the North Jersey Coast Line rail service was suspended in both directions between Middletown and Long Branch due to a pedestrian accident near Red Bank.

The train had departed New York Penn Station at 12:07 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Long Branch at 1:38 p.m. There were 600 passengers and crew aboard the train but none were injured. New Jersey Transit Police are still investigating the case.

 What Causes Train-Pedestrian Accidents?

Train-pedestrian accidents occur when a pedestrian is struck by a moving train. It is unknown what caused this particular accident, but these crashes can occur due to the following factors:

  • Many train-pedestrian accidents happen because pedestrians walk or cross on unauthorized areas, such as tracks that are not meant for public use.
  • Failure to observe warnings. Pedestrians may fail to heed warning signals like crossing gates, lights, or horns, sometimes misjudging the speed or distance of an oncoming train.
  • The use of mobile phones, headphones, or other distractions can prevent pedestrians from hearing or seeing an approaching train.
  • Visibility issues. Poor lighting conditions, fog, or the presence of obstructions near tracks can make it difficult for pedestrians to see an oncoming train.
  • Unfortunately, some accidents are intentional acts where individuals attempt suicide by stepping in front of a train.
