Man Killed in Concrete Collapse on Egg Harbor Township Construction Site

ConstructionStairs

Construction sites have a lot of dangerous elements. Concrete is a common material on job sites that can cause fatal injuries if it falls on a worker.

Sadly, this recently happened in New Jersey. A construction worker was recently killed in an accident at a work site. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of January 28 in Egg Harbor Township.

A roofing crew was cleaning up at the end of the day after conducting demolition and construction on the Clubs at Tilton. Two units have staircases that meet halfway down and merge into one staircase. There is a concrete slab where the staircases merge. The construction worker, a 23-year-old man, was underneath the slab cleaning up when it collapsed on top of him. The man suffered severe internal injuries. He was taken to AtlanticCare Atlantic City for emergency surgery, but later died from his injuries.

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department and the Egg Harbor Township building inspector were at the accident scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was promptly notified.

The Clubs at Tilton is a neighborhood of townhouse-style condominiums. Some occupants from the condos had to be evacuated after the concrete slab collapse. A woman and child were found in one of the second floor units. The Egg Harbor Township Volunteer Fire Department helped rescue the two by using a ladder to safely bring them down. Affected residents were placed in a hotel until further notice.

Concrete Slab Collapses on Construction Sites

Collapsing concrete can be a scary situation. Here’s how it happens:

  1. Inadequate formwork support. Temporary supports may be weak or improperly installed, leading to collapse.
  2. Overloading. Excessive weight from construction materials, workers, or equipment can exceed the slab’s load-bearing capacity.
  3. Poor concrete quality. Weak or improperly mixed concrete can fail under stress.
  4. Insufficient curing time. Removing supports before the concrete reaches full strength increases the risk of collapse.
  5. Design flaws. Miscalculations in structural load-bearing capacity or reinforcement placement can weaken slabs.
  6. Improper reinforcement. Incorrect placement or insufficient reinforcement leads to structural failure.
  7. Soil settlement or weak foundations. An unstable base can cause shifting and collapse.
  8. Construction errors. Rushed work, lack of adherence to safety protocols, and human error contribute to failures.

You can prevent concrete slab collapses with:

  1. Proper formwork installation. Ensure shoring and formwork are structurally sound and remain in place until the concrete reaches full strength.
  2. Accurate load calculations. Engineers must assess weight-bearing capacity and ensure the structure can handle the expected loads.
  3. High-quality concrete mix. Use the correct concrete mix with proper water-to-cement ratios for strength and durability.
  4. Adequate curing time. Follow curing guidelines and avoid removing supports prematurely.
  5. Strict safety and training protocols. Educate workers on best practices, safety standards, and hazard recognition.
