Man Leaves Country After Fatal NJ Hit and Run
After their involvement in a car accident, most people remain at the accident scene. After all, that is the law. However, some people flee the accident scene. Some even leave the country in hopes of avoiding the legal consequences.
This is what a New Jersey man did, but it didn’t work. The man killed someone in a hit and run accident in Parsippany in August. The man then left the country and went to Turkey a few days later. He was caught upon his return to the United States and he is now facing hit and run charges.
The 31-year-old man from Wayne hit a pedestrian on the evening of August 19. The accident happened along Route 46, near Sandra Drive. The driver fled the accident scene. The victim, a 35-year-old man from Trenton, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Witnesses who saw the accident believed the vehicle that had fled was a “newer model Toyota Rav4. The man was driving his parents’ vehicle when the accident occurred.
The man left for Turkey a few days after the accident. When he returned to the United States, he was taken into custody in New York. The man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death. He is currently detained in Morris County.
Fleeing an Accident Scene
Fleeing the scene of an accident, also known as a hit and run, is a serious offense. It can result in various consequences, such as the following:
- Criminal charges. Leaving an accident scene, especially if there are injuries or fatalities, can lead to criminal charges. These can range from misdemeanors to felonies. Penalties may include hefty fines, jail or prison time, and a criminal record.
- License consequences. Drivers who flee an accident may face suspension or revocation of their driver’s license. In some cases, it may be difficult or take time to regain driving privileges.
- Warrants for arrest. If the driver is identified later, the police may issue a warrant for their arrest, which could lead to further legal complications.
- Civil liability. The driver may also be held financially responsible for damages caused during the accident. This could include vehicle repairs, medical bills, and compensation for pain and suffering, especially if there was personal injury involved.
- Increased insurance penalties. Fleeing the scene of an accident can lead to increased insurance rates or the termination of your insurance policy. Many insurers treat hit-and-run incidents severely.
