Pedestrian Killed in Hit and Run Accident in Lyndhurst

Pedestrians

Pedestrians have the right of way in many situations, but sometimes vehicles don’t understand this. Drivers often plow right through intersections without slowing down, causing them to hit people who are crossing roads or walking on shoulders.

A recent pedestrian accident in New Jersey left a man dead. The fatal crash occurred on the evening of October 10 on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst.

Lyndhurst police responded to a 911 call for a report of an accident involving a car and a pedestrian on Ridge Road near Milton Avenue. Police arrived and the vehicle had left the accident scene. The pedestrian, a 57-year-old man, died at the accident scene.

A witness happened to be driving by and jumped out of his car. He held the man’s hand and talked to him as he took his last breath.

The victim was remembered as a nice guy and a fixture around Rutherford, where he grew up. He lived in Lyndhurst and worked at Steve’s Sizzling Steaks.

The incident has been classified as a hit and run accident, Both the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lyndhurst Police Department are investigating the crash.

Why Do Hit and Run Crashes Occur?

Hit-and-run crashes occur for a variety of reasons. Here are the most common causes:

  • Alcohol or drug use. Drivers may flee if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs to avoid legal repercussions.
  • Uninsured or unlicensed drivers. If a driver lacks proper insurance or a valid license, they may panic and flee to avoid the consequences.
  • Outstanding warrants. Drivers with active warrants might fear that any police interaction will lead to arrest.
  • Shock or anxiety. Some drivers make irrational decisions due to fear and adrenaline, not thinking through the consequences of fleeing the accident scene.
  • Young or inexperienced drivers may feel overwhelmed and not know what to do after a crash, resulting in flight.
  • At-fault accidents. A driver may flee to avoid being blamed and held financially responsible for the damages or injuries caused.
  • Stolen vehicles. Drivers in stolen cars want to avoid detection by law enforcement.
  • Misjudging the severity. The driver may think the accident wasn’t serious enough to stop or assume no one was injured.
  • Lack of empathy. Some drivers simply do not care about the other person’s well-being and prioritize their convenience.

Unfortunately, being a pedestrian leaves a person with little protection in the event of an accident. It is not uncommon for those hit by cars to die from their injuries, especially when the driver flees the scene and does not render medical aid.
