Slip and Fall Injuries on the Rise in New Jersey

The groundhog recently forecasted six more weeks of winter, and New Jersey residents are definitely feeling the effects of the bitter cold. The freezing weather, combined with the snow and rain, has led to icy conditions. The ground is still frozen in many areas, and this is causing a growing number of injuries.
It’s still bitterly cold even though the sun may be peeking in and out. Being outside for too long can be dangerous. Not only is there a risk of hypothermia but also slips and falls. Doctors are seeing more and more injuries from the icy conditions.
A woman from Marlton, New Jersey, recently suffered a broken wrist that will require surgery. She slipped on black ice in her driveway. She compared the pain to ‘worse than childbirth.”
She fell and landed on her rear end. Her left hand caught her, causing her to fracture her wrist painfully. The woman, who works as an orthodontist, has just one functioning hand at the moment and has stopped seeing patients temporarily.
Because of the snow and ice on the ground, doctors in the area are seeing a lot of slip and fall injuries. Broken bones in particular have been very common due to the hard, frozen ground. Lower back issues have also been common. People slip out from under themselves and land on their lower back and butt.
Black ice is especially dangerous. You cannot see it and once you slip, there’s no catching yourself.
When walking outside, you need to do what you can to protect yourself. Look for surfaces that are cleared and salted. Wear flat shoes or boots with anti-slip soles and good grips. Go slow when walking. Don’t be in a hurry. Take slow, short steps and watch where you’re going.
Be on the lookout for black ice. Black ice looks like a thin, transparent layer of ice that’s bonded to a road surface. It may look like a wet road and appear glossy. It’s especially hard to see at night, so always be looking at the ground for black, shiny surfaces.
Doctors say there’s also a risk of hypothermia and frostbite due to the bitter cold. If you venture outdoors in subfreezing temperatures make sure you have the proper gear. Wear a jacket, hat, and thick socks to protect your body.
