Woman Arrested After Crashing Into NJ Hospital

LegalPI

You may see some scary stuff in the hospital, but one thing you don’t typically see is a car driving down the hallway. That was what people recently saw at Inspira Health Center in Bridgeton after a woman drove into the hospital on New Year’s Eve.

The 38-year-old woman from Delaware crashed into the emergency department of the hospital just before midnight on December 31. Officers from the Bridgeton Police Department were called to the hospital and found out that the woman had driven about 60 feet down a hallway.

A security guard suffered a minor injury after he had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the driver. The woman remained at the accident scene. She was arrested and taken to the police department. She faces multiple criminal charges, including assault by a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, and endangering another person.

The woman is currently at the Cumberland County Jail. After the crash, ambulances were diverted away from the emergency room. There were no other injuries and patient care was not impacted by the incident.

Reasons for Deliberate Car Crashes

It is unknown why the woman crashed into the hospital, but it was likely deliberate, as crashing into the emergency room and then driving another 60 feet down a hallway does not seem accidental.

Deliberate car crashes occur for various reasons, often driven by psychological, financial, or criminal motivations. Some possible reasons include:

  • Insurance fraud. Individuals or groups intentionally cause accidents to file fraudulent insurance claims for vehicle damage, medical expenses, or personal injury compensation. Collisions are manipulated to inflate claims for financial gain.
  • Revenge or anger. Emotional outbursts during conflicts on the road may lead individuals to intentionally collide with another vehicle. Drivers may have personal vendettas and may target a specific individual due to personal disputes.
  • Suicidal intent. Some individuals may intentionally crash their vehicle as a means of attempting suicide, especially if struggling with mental health issues.
  • Criminal activity. Criminals may cause crashes to distract or delay law enforcement. They may also stage a crash to gain access to another vehicle or its contents. They may also destroy evidence in a car by crashing it.
  • Political or terrorist acts. People may use vehicles in deliberate crashes as a form of protest or attack.
  • Mental health disorders. Psychological conditions, such as psychosis or mania, can lead individuals to act irrationally, including crashing a car deliberately.
