Worker Uses Umbrella to Fight Off Pit Bull

What do you do when it’s raining while you’re outside? You open an umbrella. What do you do when a menacing dog is trying to attack you or someone nearby. Same thing — open an umbrella.

This may seem like an odd response to a dog attack, but it worked for a PSE&G service technician in New Jersey. He is being hailed as a hero after he saved a girl from a dog attack in Essex County.

The dog attack happened at around noon on December 4 on Mount Prospect Avenue in Newark. The PSE&G worker saw a little girl running around a van with a pit bull chasing her. The girls’ mother was chasing the dog, who was off leash.

The girl’s mother had fallen while running, and then the girl fell as well. The service technician saw what was unfolding and needed to help. He got out of his truck and jumped into action.

The man grabbed his umbrella and ran across the street. The dog was on top of the little girl at this point. Wherever the dog went, the man went.

Open umbrellas are known to confuse and distract dogs, so the man was on the right track. He even used the element of surprise to scare the dog. He would run up to the dog and yell ”ha!”

The dog then started to come after the umbrella. At one point, he even tried to break through it. The man kept moving wherever the pit bull moved and continued to fend off the dog while the girl and her mother jumped behind a fence to safety. The dog eventually gave up and ran off.

The girl and her mother did not speak English, but were able to tell the man that they were hurt. He called 911 and the two were given medical treatment. He hopes they are OK.

While the man appreciates the support for what he did, he says the girl’s mother was the real hero. When the dog was on top of the girl, the mom was grabbing the dog’s skin so hard that it was stretching. She tried so hard to get the dog off the girl and deserves praise.

So it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s raining. The takeaway from this incident is that opening an umbrella can be good luck when you’re dealing with an aggressive dog.
